Lev Tabenkin

“ As a true artist, Lev Tabenkin is guided by creative images and his every work is not just a story, it is a novel. You can trace the life history, history of  religion, faith, love and sufferings and thus his paintings are our own history since the creation up to present. It is there where Tabenkin’s power is embodied!”

Alexander Makarov-Vek, the poet.

Lev Tabenkin (19520 is the Russian artist, the inventor of a unique artistic flexible language which he employs to create his easel paintings and sculptures. He is the bright representative of Russian figurative style of the 80s.

He was born in Moscow. In 1975 he graduated from Moscow State University of Printing Arts of Ivan Fedorov and since 1978 he is the fellow of the Union of Artists. He is the son of Elia Tabenkin who is one of the most exquisite artists of the sixties. Both the son and the father are prone to be alike in their individuality and the profundity of their inner worlds which filled their paintings.

As early as in the 80s critics reckoned Lev a painter for whom expressiveness is impossible without rich bright colors. This kind of paintings are characterized by a colure pulsation, its motions and emergence, determined the structure and the idea of a work.

He plays with colors to model a substance in a space. His heroes seem to be fashioned out of pastose pictorial clay, though images of his works look very simple and they usually represent a mere action (a flying seagull, a sleeping boy, a tired traveler, a growing tree) on the whole they are  considerable and reasonably sufficient and vital.
